HCA Florida Ocala Hospital recently announced the launch of a new pharmacy residency program that will train residents in drug treatment and patient care and is the first of its kind in the county.
The new program is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists an lasts one year for general clinical pharmacy practice. Residents may then pursue a second residency year in a specialty of their choosing.
Participating residents will learn through evidence-based medicine and participation in healthcare team activities to design and manage drug treatment regimens for patients.
According to the organization, residents will have the opportunity to conduct research projects, learn about medication use evaluations, attend conferences, and get involved in committees in order to hone their skills as clinical pharmacists by the end of the first year.
The program rotations are all 4 to 6 weeks long, with multiple types required including internal medicine, infectious disease, critical care, research, emergency medicine, and administration.
There are also several other elective rotation options available, as well as “longitudinal learning experiences,” according to the organization.
