Ocala nurse who called patient ‘son of a bitch’ reprimanded, ordered to anger management

An Ocala nurse was reprimanded by the Florida Department of Health’s Board of Nursing and must complete anger management classes for calling a patient a “son of a bitch” during an interaction at AdventHealth Ocala.

The board issued its final order on Monday, August 21, in the case of Michiel Toone, R.N., who was accused of making the statement while working on assignment in October.

According to an administrative complaint filed with the FDOH, Toone was employed by Nightingale Nurses, a nursing staffing agency, and was on a work assignment at AdventHealth Ocala (1500 SW 1st Avenue) on October 12, 2022.

While working, Toone allegedly called a 77-year-old male patient, identified in the complaint as “R.S.,” a “son of a bitch.”

The complaint goes on to cite Florida Statute 464.018(1)(h), which provides that unprofessional conduct constitutes grounds for disciplinary action. It accuses Toone of engaging in unprofessional conduct in directing “abusive, threatening or foul language toward” the patient.

In its decision, the board issued a formal reprimand against Toone and he was required to pay $3,247.90 in investigative costs. He was also ordered to complete eight hours of anger management courses.

According to DOH records, Toone has been licensed as a registered nurse since June 2015.

Last month, an Ocala doctor was banned from performing abortions after it was determined that he had performed an abortion on a woman who was past 24 weeks pregnant.

Another doctor was reprimanded and fined thousands of dollars for not properly administering antibiotics to a woman with sepsis. That patient’s limbs required amputation after she was sent home without the appropriate medication.
