The Florida Department of Health in Marion County will hold free weekly classes at the Freedom Public Library in Ocala to help diabetic and pre-diabetic participants better understand their condition and self-care options.
The classes, which are a part of the Diabetes Empowerment and Education Program (DEEP), will begin on Thursday, September 21, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Freedom Public Library, which is located at 5870 SW 95th Street in Ocala.
Additional weekly classes will be held every Thursday through November 9, at the same time and location.
The classes will cover such topics as understanding how diabetes affects the human body and how to monitor it. DEEP also focuses on the importance of meal planning, physical activity, and a balanced diet, as well as teaching participants how to identify and prevent diabetic complications.
In addition, the Marion County Fire Rescue Paramedicine Program will provide free clinical screenings during each class.
There is no cost to attend the weekly diabetes education and prevention classes, but space is limited.
