Marion County offering free breast cancer screenings this week

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Florida Department of Health in Marion County (DOH-Marion) is partnering with county commissioners to provide free breast cancer screenings to women in the community on Thursday, October 19.

According to DOH-Marion, arrangements have been made with mammolink, a provider of mobile mammogram services, to offer free mammograms on Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the McPherson Governmental Complex located at 601 SE 25th Avenue in Ocala.

The event is open to all women regardless of insurance status.

Staff from DOH-Marion’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program will also be on hand to determine if women can enroll in the program. Those who qualify can obtain breast and cervical cancer screenings for free or at a low cost.

“Getting a mammogram is the single most effective method of early detection, since it can identify cancer several years before physical symptoms develop,” stated DOH-Marion in a press release.
