The Florida Department of Health in Marion County (DOH-Marion) is inviting local seniors to attend a class next week that will promote healthy aging.
On Thursday, February 22, the “Staying Healthy as You Age” class will be held from 11 a.m. to noon at the Marion Oaks Community Center, which is located at 280 Marion Oaks Lane in Ocala.
The month of February is recognized as American Heart Month. According to DOH-Marion, this is a time to increase heart disease awareness and promote prevention and treatment in the community.
Health officials are encouraging all Floridians to adopt a lifestyle that promotes heart health and well-being, including maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, adding physical activity into your weekly schedule, and eating nutritious foods that compliment a healthy cardiovascular system.
Nationally, as well as in Florida, more people die each year from heart disease than from any other cause.
DOH-Marion is teaming up with Marion County Senior Services to offer seniors (ages 55 and up) the “Staying Healthy as You Age” class in an effort to help participants discover ways to become healthier as they get older. These methods include:
- Tapping into the power of a positive attitude.
- Reaping the benefits of good nutrition, physical activity, and regular medical exams to promote the health of your cardiovascular system.
- Stimulating the brain with mental exercises.
- Leading an active social life.
The class is free to attend and no preregistration is required. For more information, contact Melissa Marino at 352-644-2624.
