An elementary school in Ocala will soon be moving to a year-round calendar.
In a media release on Tuesday, Marion County Public Schools announced that Wyomina Park Elementary School and its 580-plus students will become part of the state’s Year-round School Pilot Program.
The pilot program was approved by Florida legislators and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis back in May of 2023.
As part of this program, Wyomina Park Elementary’s students would still attend 180 days of school like other students. In addition, they would also have around 12 weeks of vacation spread throughout the year instead of concentrated during the summer.
MCPS is just one of three school districts statewide to be selected for the five-year pilot program. The goal of the program is to see if year-round schooling works in today’s society.
Specific schools in Alachua and Brevard counties will also take part in the program.
On Thursday, February 8, a special meeting will be held at 5 p.m. in the cafeteria at Wyomina Park Elementary. During this meeting, staff and parents will discuss the concept of year-round school.
Wyomina Park Elementary School is located at 511 NE 12th Avenue in Ocala.
