Ocala announces paid internship program for summer 2024

The City of Ocala’s Water Resources and Engineering internship program will return this summer, and high school students interested in pursuing a career in utilities and local government are encouraged to apply.

The internship program will allow participating students to experience the day-to-day operations of the city’s Water Resources and Engineering Department while working alongside professionals.

“Throughout this internship program, students will gain invaluable hands-on experience as they learn how all the divisions work together to provide water, sewer, and engineering services to customers in the City of Ocala,” reads a press release from the city.

The internship is open to incoming high school juniors and seniors, as well as students who graduate in 2024. Each intern will receive on-the-job training and experience in a division of their choice.

A total of five interns will be selected for this cycle of the internship program. Two interns will work in engineering, two will work in water resources operations, and one will work in water conservation and outreach, according to the city.

Students who are interested in the paid internship program must submit their applications by no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, March 29. Qualified applicants will be interviewed in mid-April, and all selected interns will be notified in early May.

The work schedules will begin on Monday, June 3 and end on Thursday, July 25, though the exact schedule for each intern will be contingent on their school schedule.

This is a paid internship with a proposed hourly rate of $15 per hour. Interns will be expected to work approximately four days a week, six hours daily, for around 28 hours each week.

Applications are available on the City of Ocala’s Water Resources and Engineering Internships webpage. Prospective interns can only participate once in the program.
