Deland man critically injured after metal beam crashes through windshield on I-4

A driver was critically injured Wednesday morning after a metal beam crashed through his windshield on Interstate 4 in Seminole County.

Steven McCourt, 60, of Deland was driving a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo westbound on I-4 directly behind a 2011 Ford pickup truck driven by Derek Swink, 25, of Lake Mary, according to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report. Swink slowed down due to traffic congestion, but McCourt failed to slow down causing the front of his vehicle to strike the rear of Swink’s truck, the report stated. Swink’s truck was hauling metal beams, and red flags and a yellow traffic vest were attached to the rear of the beams that extended past the bed of the truck.

The beams crashed through the windshield of McCourt’s vehicle during the collision, leaving McCourt critically injured.

McCourt was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center. The crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending.
