Daisy E. Bailey
December 16, 1927 – March 21, 2024
Daisy Elizabeth Bailey was born December 16, 1927, in Manhattan, New York to the union of Samuel and Ruth Hunt. After living 96 wonderful years, God called her home to rest on March 21, 2024.
Daisy was an “A” student in school but never wanted to go to college. She instead desired to work to assist her mother with the household bills. During high school Daisy took a job as a Milliner. She shaped, steamed and sewed decorations onto hats. She said that job didn’t last long because it was too much to work and complete schoolwork. Daisy graduated from high school in 1945 (on a Friday) and started a federal job the next week (on a Tuesday) in the Division of Disbursements where she worked for the next 9 years. In 1946 she met Wilbur V. Bailey through a colleague at that job (Wilburs’cousin Muriel Clark). They were married on May 11, 1952, then moved to Long Island, New York where they designed and built their home on Homestead Drive in Coram. Daisy worked at Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center, volunteered over 20 years as treasurer and Board Member for the Gordon Heights Federal Credit Union, then retired from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as an Auditor after approximately 28 years.
Daisy has played piano since age 4. She even accompanied, on piano, singer Mildred Fields at Carnegie Hall at age 22. In later years, she was an “on call” organist at St. Michaels & All Angels Episcopal Church then, the piano teacher for a plethora of individuals who lived in Coram & Gordon Heights. Daisy was an avid crafter whose hobbies included canning, sewing, knitting, crocheting, needle point, flower gardening, listening to classical music and opera. She was also a SCRABBLE expert/aficionado.
Daisy was preceded in death by her father, Samuel M. Hunt, Mother, Ruth M. Hunt, brothers Alowiches (Uncle Al), Walter and Herbert Hunt, daughters Patricia and Diana Bailey and cousin Tathleen Barrett. Left to mourn are her daughter’s and son, Roslyn Bailey-Oddman (Neville), Leila Goldschlager, Myrel Bailey-Walton (Leland), Wilbur Bailey, Jr., Leslie Bailey-Clarke (Oswald), and Josephine Bailey. In addition to a host of beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and an array of other family and friends.May she rest in peace.
